Galápagos Land-Based Wildlife Photography

Eleven days, Quito to Quito, on the islands — not a cruise. Wildlife at arm’s length that doesn’t flee.

Everyone photographs the Galápagos from a cruise. That's the mistake. We stay on the islands and shoot on the light's schedule.

What you’ll photograph.

Each island brings its own cast. Blue-footed boobies in courtship display; marine iguanas at dawn; giant tortoises through highland mist at El Chato; Galápagos penguins on the equator; white-tip reef sharks resting in clear shallows at Tintoreras; Pinnacle Rock above a white-sand beach at Bartolomé; flamingos in the coastal lagoons; frigatebirds with inflated red pouches at Cerro Tijeretas; and Punta Pitt, the only place all three booby species nest together. The lava arches and tunnels of Los Túneles combine landscape and wildlife like nowhere else in the islands.

Why we stay on the islands, not a ship

Most Galápagos trips are cruises, and a cruise runs on the ship’s clock — it arrives when it arrives and the light gets no say. We sleep on the islands instead, so we’re at a location before the sun is, we stay through the golden window, and we come back to the same rock at the other end of the day. A marine iguana colony at first light gives you frames the scattered mid-morning version never will. Every boat and inter-island flight is a private charter for our group, precisely so we can move on the light’s schedule and reach coastlines the cruise itineraries never touch.

If you’ve only ever seen the Galápagos sold as a cruise, here’s the case for doing it the other way — island-based.

Why go with me to the Galapagos?

  1. Land-based, so the day runs on the light — on location before sunrise, back again at dusk, returning to key places at their best hour.
  2. Small group, capped at eight photographers, with certified local naturalist guides for behavior, access and species, plus a professional photographer-guide directing the shooting.
  3. Every boat and inter-island flight is privately chartered for our group — that’s what lets us leave early, stay late, and reach the remote coastlines.
  4. All-inclusive Quito to Quito: domestic flights, charter boats, all park and control permits, island hotels, meals, water and transfers — no surprise fees at the airport.
  5. The perfect season and window of opportunity so we have the best quality of light, no heavy mist or heavy rainy season.
  6. You just shoot. The correct hotels in the right places, so we are close to the action and can spin on a dime and go someplace new, based on the current weather conditions. We help you pack the correct clothing for the season and choose the right camera gear.

Land-based, maximizing the light

Why travel with Sergio...

  1. Forty years in the Andes and Amazon behind the planning — a wildlife photographer’s eye shaping where you stand and when and working hand-in-hand with the local experts.
  2. A photographer’s expedition, not a sightseeing tour: dawn and dusk are the schedule, with daily hands-on help on settings, lens choice, composition and reading the light.
  3. Three islands worked properly, not a dozen checked off — each location gets the time it takes to make the picture, not a transit-schedule glance.
  4. Decades of relationships and open doors. The island people are naturally connected to this archipelago by family, friendships and working relationships. They know where and when to go for the best photo ops. They also know where not to go, which is as important.
  5. You get the truth, not a sales pitch — on what a day will deliver, on when the wildlife behavior peaks, and on why land-based is the right call for the Galapagos if you really want to maximize your shooting time.
  6. This is not a ship cruise on a closed-loop route. I am here to help you make the shot in the field, at the moment, when the animals are relaxed and going about their business.
My wife said it was easy when she was here a few years ago. I saw her photos but she's a pro, I'm not. So I figured she can outshoot me any day of the week. But, she was right! Remember that sea lion that swam up to me and then lounged like 2 feet away? Well, my best photos are of that guy and his pals. I cannot thank you enough for the great logitics and awesome food. That ceviche on the beach was to die for! I will gladly recommend your services. Thanks again.

The last time I went to the Galapagos was like 17 years ago on a chartered cruise ship, which was fine, but I felt a little captive, you know what I mean? This time, your land-based itinerary was so much more productive and most of all, I loved being able to go off on my own and shoot at my own pace. I think your version is the one people will appreciate more. Such a great trip, I needed this. Thank you so much.

I was not sure if the flights would work but you made it happen last minute. So grateful for your patience and good humor during the beginning days. I am happiest with the tortugas and sea lion photos. My shark photos were ok but I made up for them with the Oyster Catchers and Blue-footed Boobies. They really don't care if you are near them at all. I got great portraits of them! Muchas gracias, Sergio!
