The ancient lava flows of past eruptions from Mt. Ollague (Chile/Bolivia border) create a rugged landscape of canyons and arroyos where native hardy plants survive the high-altitude, and freezing cold winds of the Sud Lipez region in the Department of Potosi in the southwestern corner of Bolivia.

A high-altitude bog lies at 15,750'/4,800m and is across the way from Mt. Sunchuli (17,200'/5,300m) and reflects the peaks of the Apolobamba Range in Bolivia during winter. There is a mine on the flanks of this peak that has been exploited since the time of the Inca Empire.

A hardy and endangered ground hugging plant called a Llareta (Az — Yareta (Azorella compacta), also known as "Llareta" in Spanish or Azorella yareta in the past) is a tiny flowering plant in the family Apiaceae native to South America, occurring in the Puna grasslands of the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, the north of Chile and the west of Argentina at between 3200 and 4500 metres altitude. Yareta is an evergreen perennial being in leaf all year. The pink or lavender flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects. The plant is self-fertile. The plant prefers light (sandy) and well-drained soils. It can grow in nutritionally poor environments, no matter if the soil is acidic, neutral or basic (alkaline). Yareta is well-adapted to high insolation rates which are typical of the highlands, and cannot grow in shade. The plant grows in a very compact way in order to reduce heat losses and very close to ground level where air temperature is one or two degrees Celsius higher than the mean air temperature, this is due to the longwave radiation re-radiated by the soil (which is usually dark gray to black in the Puna). The plant growth rate has been recently estimated at approximately 1.5 centimeters per year (Kleier and Rundel 2004). Many yaretas are over 3,000 years old.

Sergio: THANK YOU! for such a great trip across the Altiplano and beyond. It was everything we had hoped for and I can't think of a thing we missed, other than perhaps temperatures that were a wee bit warmer...we got a lot of laughs out of it and great stories to tell "we only travel to Hawaii" co-workers. Roberto was a delightful guide full of insight and funny jokes. He was endlessly patient, particularly of my slow learning of Spanish. Of all the places we were and everything we did, I like Bolivia the best. It's a very seductive country...astoundingly raw and wild scenery with friendly and honest people. Who knows, but I'll definitely be back...it was a great adventure!

Sergio, Stephen and I just wanted to thank you so much for all your help in planning our trip to Bolivia. We had a fabulous time! The highlight of our trip was Chalalan Lodge. What a magical place. Alejandro was our guide who added a lot to our overall experience. We loved the rainforest, the food was wonderful, canoeing on the lake was great. La Paz was such an interesting city. Hotel Oberland was very charming and your friend Walter was a terrific host. All the flights and connections worked out perfectly and we were actually able to fit in that side trip to Peru to see Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Hola Sergio! It's been a wild ride...and Bolivia is the kind of place that keeps me excited. It may be raw around the edges but that makes it even better for the adventures I was looking for. The trekking and climbing were as good as any I've had in the Andes... there were no crowds! Your team of drivers, guides, cooks and porters were so nice and incredibly helpful and I can't thank them enough for all the help! The hidden secrets of Bolivia are safe with me...until I come back with more friends next time. A warm hug from the Canadian, Rockies...your old stomping ground, right? Cheers!
